Signs Your Air Filter Needs Replaced
Replacing your air filter is one of the easiest things to forget about as a homeowner. However, replacing it is super easy and can help your home’s heating and cooling system run efficiently and prolong its lifespan, while also preventing HVAC issues that can be expensive to repair.
So when do you change your filter?
We recommend changing it every three months. However, this varies from home to home. For example, homes that have pets inside may need to change theirs more often.
So what are the common signs your filter needs replaced?
The filter looks dirty or clogged.
The easiest way to find out if the filter needs replaced, is to take a look at it. If it seems to be clogged, coated in dust, torn or otherwise damaged, it’s time to change it.
Your electric bill got higher.
Take a look at the last few bills you’ve received, is your energy bill higher than usual? When the filter is clogged your system has to work harder. More energy is consumed and ultimately wasted. Leading you to pay a pretty penny at the end of the month.
You have dirt around your vents.
Have you noticed an extra build-up of dust around your vents? This may be because of a clogged air filter! If dust is building up on the vents, it’s entering the air in your home, leading to dusty tables and possibly worsening allergies. While blocked ducts can lead to similar problems, it’s often more sensible to check the filters first. Replacing your HVAC filter can dramatically improve indoor air quality.
Your AC unit is hot.
When your air filter is clogged, it causes your HVAC system to work harder for longer hours. If you notice that your unit is hot to the touch, check your filter right away. This is not always the solution for an overheating AC, though. If you have changed the filter and the unit is not cooling down, call an Allegiance technician to come and take a look at it.You may have a bigger problem on your hands that could lead to an unexpected breakdown if left unresolved.
Your allergies are worse.
AC filters are your first defense against airborne allergens and contaminants. If your filter is clogged or dirty, these pollutants can enter your HVAC system and circulate throughout your home. For people with chronic conditions, such as allergies or asthma, a clean air filter can really make a difference in air quality and alleviate some symptoms.
